Gustav on Vacation:
Mahler, Klimt and Viennese Society at Attersee
in 1893 Gustav Mahler and his siblings came on vacation to Steinbach am Attersee. The composer and his contemporaries in Viennese politics, culture and society came in increasing numbers to spend their summers in the spectacular nature settings of the Salzkammergut. Mahler, Brahms and Klimt were only some of the illustrious guests that sought relaxation and inspiration in this region. The Emperor resided in nearby Bad Ischl, the musician Ignaz Brüll entertained his guests at a Villa in Unterach, the politicians Viktor Adler and Engelbert Pernerstorfer spent summers in Nußdorf.
The Steinbach Mahler Festival 2020 will celebrate this fashion of nature tourism at the turn of the century with concerts, excursions, presentations, and exhibitions, making it possible to experience the art and society of the time in this awe-inspiring setting.
Mahler and Steinbach am Attersee
Gustav Mahler arrived in Steinbach am Attersee for the first time in the summer of 1893.
The breathtaking surroundings worked wonders for Mahler’s creativity, inspiring half a dozen songs and most of two enormous symphonies (2nd and 3rd) composed over the course of four summers (through 1896) in a specially built hut at the water‘s edge.
Today the "Komponierhäuschen", as it is known in German, has become a point of attraction for Mahler lovers all over the world.

Gustav-Mahler-Saal Seefeld, Steinbach am Attersee
In 2020 the Gustav Mahler Festival in Steinbach am Attersee is once again presenting an exciting program of concerts, talks and outdoor activities. This year the theme is "Gustav on Vacation: Mahler, Klimt and Viennese Society at the Attersee." Mahler was only one of many artists and personalities who sought recuperation and inspiration on the shores of the Attersee in the latter19th century and it is this time and place that we are featuring in a great variety of events and activities.
After the Openings of the Festival at Mahler's composing hut by the lake, there follows a selection of musical works performed by Agnes Palmisano and Paul Gulda, with readings from diaries and other Sources from this time by Marie-Therese Anborn.
The next day we will explore Bad Ischl, the imperial spa town where nature tourism in Austria had its origins. After a tour of the town, which will include the Emperor's Villa, we round out the day with a song recital dedicated to travel with songs by Schubert, Krenek, Brahms and Mahler.
On Saturday we travel across the Attersee with the "Gustav Mahler", a boat that takes its name from the great composer. We will pass and point out the many villas that line the shore of the lake on our way up to the Village of Schörfling, where Gustav Klimt spent many a summer. Here we will visit the Klimt Center and the Klimt Garden and get an impression of the life and Inspiration of this great painter. That evening we have a major event prepared: a performance Mahler' Second Symphony in an arrangement for 2 pianos, choir and soloists performed in Schloss Kammer with a pre-concert talk by the noted Mahler expert, Franz Willnauer.
To conculde, a Matinee on Sunday by the Orchestra for the Earth under the baton of John Warner with works by Mozart, Richard Strauss and - on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his death - Friedrich Gulda, another artist who was fascinated by this Region.
We hope you will join us to experience a wide range of programming while enjoying the spectacular beauty of this unique place in a relaxed atmosphere.
